What Is Paleo? (Paleolithic Diet)

Paleolithic Diet

This is sort of a follow up to last week’s post. You may have heard of the Paleolithic Diet, also called the Caveman Diet. Ever wonder what it actually is? Is it healthy for you? Well I have been Paleo now for over 6 months and have never felt better! It is completely sustainable, provides your body with the best nutrients it needs to function at its most optimal level.

The latest version of The Healthy Way Newsletter has just been posted in which I give a brief explanation into what exactly the Paleo diet entails and how it benefits the body. Addicted to Coffee? You may be Dopamine Deficient!

Addicted to Coffee

Coffee…mmmmm I love the smell and the taste! It is definitely not a daily indulgence of mine (sometimes not even weekly), however for some it’s an essential part of their morning routine. Coffee used in small amounts is not overly harmful for our body; in fact organic coffee actually contains many beneficial antioxidants. Our society however tends to use it as a crutch leading to over-consumption and caffeine addiction.

Caffeine stimulates our adrenal glands to produce adrenaline which give us that sought-after “rush” and mental clarity; however the end result is increased levels of cortisol (the inflammatory, stress and fat hormone). Health concerns begin to arise when caffeine is abused and our adrenal glands become over-worked. When the adrenals are under-active your body feels more fatigued and the evil cycle begins of needing more caffeine, feeling more anxious, depleting the adrenals even more, etc, etc.

This article from explains how caffeine addiction may be the result of lower than normal dopamine levels in our brain. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter in our brain that elevates our moods. The article also gives suggestions on how to help kick the caffeine addiction habit. In addition to what they mention I strongly recommend beginning a treatment protocol to help recharge your adrenal glands before trying to give up caffeine as it will dramatically lessen withdrawal symptoms.

Get It Together & Achieve Your Health Goals

Get It Together & Achieve Your Health Goals

I talk to people pretty much on a daily basis who wish they could get “back on track”. This can seem like an overwhelming feat which often leads to us putting it off: “OK next Monday it’s GO TIME”, “I just need to get through these next two weeks and then I’m getting serious”, “Summer’s a bad time to start”, etc etc, etc…. Any of this sound familiar??

Trust me; I understand that it can be a tough to make a change to your eating habits and lifestyle. A regular exercise routine can be the hardest habit to make, and often is the easiest habit to break. However, you’ll never have more energy, be happier, or have more confidence than when you decide it’s time to flip that switch holding you back from achieving your health goals!

Mark wrote a great article, “It’s Time to ‘Get Real’” in which he take a bit of a “tough love” approach to help inspire you to make that decision today…not tomorrow, not two weeks from now, not after the summer is over… today! Mark wrote the book “The Primal Blueprint” which talks about incorporating primal (or Paleolithic) eating habits into our daily life in order to improve our overall health and fitness level. I’ve adopted the Paleo lifestyle for the past 6 months and have legitimately never felt better in my life (but more on that another time!)

Microwaved Veggies Lose 97% Nutrients!!

Microwaved Veggies Lose 97% Nutrients

It’s a common question that arises – how damaging is microwaving food? Many people rely on microwaves as a quick and easy way to cook all sorts of meals. I found this humorous (yet informational) article on the damaging effects microwaves have on our food by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger. It comes complete with a cartoon: The Adventures of Vita-Man!

The Wonders of Watermelon

The Wonders of Watermelon

Watermelon…a deliciously sweet fruit available almost year round but is a staple in most of our summer meals. Watermelon holds about 92% water making it an excellent to help keep you hydrated in the summer heat.

Watermelon packs a punch of powerful antioxidants. Some of the star players include Vitamin C, Vitamin A (beta-carotene) and Lycopene. Antioxidants neutralize damaging free radicals in the body. Free radicals can damage cellular DNA, cause inflammation and oxidizes cholesterol making it stick to blood vessel walls increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke. Lycopene has been linked to reducing the risk of cancers, most notably prostate cancer, and lowering inflammation that leads to heart disease and hypertension.

Watermelon is a great source of B vitamins, magnesium and potassium making it an excellent energy booster. This amazing fruit is also exceptionally high in citrulline, an amino acid that is converted in our bodies into arginine, another amino acid. Arginine is used by the cells lining our blood vessels to produce nitric oxide which dilates blood vessels. Nitric oxide helps to lower blood pressure, improves athletic endurance, and improves insulin sensitivity in type 2 diabetic patients.

Fun fact: the blood vessel dilation and improved blood flow effect of nitric oxide will help prevent erectile dysfunction – Viagra uses a compound which enhances nitric oxide levels in the body.

Watermelons originated in Africa and were first cultivated in Egypt. They were so valued that they were placed in tombs of many Egyptian kings. Around the 10th century watermelons were introduced into China and then to the Western Hemisphere shortly after the discovery of the New World. In Russia, where much of the commercial supply of watermelons is grown, there is a popular wine made from this fruit. Other leading commercial growers include China, Turkey, Iran and the USA.
